Erdogan heads to Germany to reset relations Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will make his first official visit to Germany since 2014, as both countries seek to rebuild their relationship after issues in recent years raised tensions. "The most important goal of my visit to Germany is to leave the phase of the last few years completely behind us in our relations. In addition, it will be a matter of establishing closer economic relations for mutual benefit," Erdogan said of the trip, which also comes in light of Turkey losing the bid to host Euro 2024 to Germany. Nonetheless, Erdogan's two-day visit will have a packed schedule with topics such as trade, Syria, the refugee crisis, security and rising xenophobia in Europe high on the agenda. The leaders will meet twice during the trip hoping to establish a renewed relationship between the historic allies. |
